The fire that erupted early yesterday morning in the Lamaha squatting area destroyed a home and an apartment complex. The tenant, who was reportedly outraged about being robbed of her cell phone, is suspected of starting the fire.
There were eight apartments in the building, each rented by one or more tenants.
Leon James, a renter, claimed that at around three in the morning, the fire woke him up while he was asleep. According to him, all he could do was stand up and exclaim, “Fire, fire, fire!” He bemoaned how little clothes he had left after everything was lost in the fire—even his money were ruined. From January till now, I have been saving money. Each week, I would set aside about $5,000, and if I had extra money, I would add another $2,000, and so on. All of it was burned up. My friend helped me purchase a brand-new generator, which I later lost to fire. Everything burns down, including the stove, furnishings, and television.
