Recover Guyana held a very successful fundraiser last Saturday to raise money for its ambitious “green hamper” initiative, which aims to address the urgent needs of vulnerable communities across the nation.
With the theme “Without Art, Earth is Eh,” the event aimed to raise vital funds for the hamper distribution that would take place from October to December of 2024.
It will target those most in need, including cancer patients/survivors, senior persons, disadvantaged families, and children in orphanages.
Initially intended for the Ramada Georgetown Princess Hotel, the event’s enormous ticket sales led to a change of location to the Monument Gardens on Church and Camp Streets, Georgetown.
This modification improved the event’s alignment with its environmental focus in addition to accommodating the enormous turnout.
Recover Guyana’s president, Dave Lalltoo, gave a call to action to kick off the event. With each green hamper, 6,069 households have been reached by Recover Guyana. This afternoon, our main goal is to raise $5 million. Fortunately, we already made [over $3 million],” he said.
Additionally, SHOUT, an internal project looking for Guyana’s best young environmental speaker, was highlighted at the fundraiser.
Local performers, including young violinist Akeem Adams and singer Jovinski Thorne, contributed to the lively atmosphere of the event. A bingo competition, fashion shows, and a trip to Kaieteur Falls, as well as an island-hopping tour in the Essequibo River, were among the prizes that were awarded to the attendees.
Special guests included Fadeya King, previous ‘Miss Earth Guyana’ 2019 and 1st Runner-Up Miss Universe Guyana 2024, as well as contestants from the Miss Guyana Teen Scholar Pageant 2024 and Social Development Director Mr. Jairo Rodrigues.
The occasion also featured participation from the Guyana National Library Seniors group and different sponsors.
