Josh Cullen, who acknowledged having conflicting emotions on the outcome, thinks Burnley’s draw with Manchester United is a step in the “right direction.”
Zeki Amdouni’s late penalty made sure Vincent Kompany’s team didn’t lose on Saturday at Old Trafford.
Given that the Clarets deserved their 1-1 draw and might have even won it, that would have been extremely cruel.
But now that the distance to safety is just two points, Cullen is happy that Burnley is still fighting to survive.
“We know that Old Trafford is a difficult place to visit, so every point you score should be helpful to the team.
On the other hand, I believe we had a lot of opportunities to win the game and that we could have done it on a different day.
“With their talented players, they will undoubtedly produce opportunities despite your best efforts to limit their chances and create as many as you can. It’s unavoidable, especially at home. However, Aro [Muric] produced some incredible saves once more, and the boys played excellent defense.
We can learn a lot from this performance because we made our own opportunities.
We’ve been saying we’re still in this struggle for a time now. We’ve always firmly believed that we are not dead and buried. This is yet another positive step.
The Clarets’ schedule doesn’t get any easier; they face Newcastle United the following week. Despite this, their form is at its best point of the season, having only lost once in their previous eight games.
“We have some tough games ahead of us, but we’ve had tough games in the past few weeks,” Cullen continued. “We’re up against a good Brighton team, we’re going to Sheffield United on the road, which is never an easy game, and we’re coming to Old Trafford too.” This league has challenging games all the time.
“We have to take the positives from this game and from what we’ve been building this whole season and believe we can get as many points as we need to stay in the league,” the player said. “We know we have three huge games against good sides now.”
