On Sunday, September 8, the Dallas Cowboys defeated the Cleveland Browns 33-17 and looked strong in the process. Additionally, the Cowboys created a stir on Sunday morning when they signed quarterback Dak Prescott to a four-year contract extension, elevating him to the top of the NFL’s pay scale. However, Matt Holder of Bleacher Report’s Scouting Department is highlighting a few areas where the Cowboys may use some assistance, even in spite of the fantastic NFL season opener.
In a September 9 article, Holder praised the Cowboys, calling their game against the Browns a “strong performance” and emphasizing the major issues on every squad before Week 2. That being said, Holder currently states that he thinks the center position is the Cowboys’ biggest vulnerability, with left tackle, running back, linebacker, and second cornerback following suit.
Holder said the Cowboys should “now” add cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon to the roster in order to provide some much-needed relief.
Holder gushed over the Cowboys, calling their game against the Browns a “strong performance,” in a September 9 post on identifying every roster’s main shortcomings before Week 2. Holder, however, currently states that he thinks the center position is the Cowboys’ largest vulnerability, followed by the positions of left tackle, running back, linebacker, and second cornerback.
Holder recommends the Cowboys add cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon to the roster “right away” in order to provide some much-needed relief.
“As was indicated last week, with DaRon Bland starting the season on injured reserve, the Cowboys could use some seasoned assistance at cornerback. In the meanwhile, he said of the free agent, “it’s pretty perplexing that Witherspoon is still available.” “He has a history of injuries, but he just finished a season in which he participated in every game for the Rams, starting every one of them, and recorded a career-high 14 passes defensed. According to PFF, the seven-year veteran also let up a pitiful 76.7 passer rating when he was targeted.
“So, considering the team’s need at cornerback and Witherspoon’s starting experience, this could be a situation where the stars align,” he said in closing.
Witherspoon was described as a “stabilizing veteran presence in Rams secondary” by writer Stu Jackson in a February 2024 “Free Agent Spotlight” on the Rams website.
In an attempt to start the season as healthy as possible, Jackson noted that “most notable, he played and started in every regular season game for the first time in his career. This was probably a carryover from finding a new trainer and program that he hadn’t had earlier in his career last offseason.”
From 2017 until 2020, Witherspoon was a member of the San Francisco 49ers, where he began his NFL career. March 2021 saw him sign a contract with the Seattle Seahawks; however, in September of the same year, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers. In June 2023, he became a member of the Rams.
