Even after the Clemson Tigers’ terrible season-opening loss last week, at least one former Georgia Bulldog standout is optimistic about the team.
There has been a lot of negativity around the Clemson Tigers and their 34-3 loss against the Georgia Bulldogs for the whole of this week.
The loss caused the Tigers (0-1) to fall to the bottom of the AP Top 25. Georgia remained the nation’s top-ranked team.
You had to look closely at the box score given the huge final score to realize that Clemson was only behind 6-0 at halftime.
One media person at least took a moment to remind everyone of that fact and offered an audacious guess as to what the Tigers’ future holds.
That media person was, oddly enough, a former quarterback for Georgia.
In a recent interview with TigerNet.com’s Orange Crush podcast, Aaron Murray shared his prediction for Clemson’s season finale.
“Clemson will be 11-1 at the end of the season and playing in the ACC Championship (game),” he said.
When the Tigers get ready to play the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Saturday night, their coach, Dabo Swinney, has never been one to offer an explanation for his squad.
He has identified several areas in which Clemson needs to improve in order to defeat the upset-minded Mountaineers, who own historic triumphs against Texas A&M and Michigan in their record book.
However, Murray—who is currently employed by ESPN—was also eager to remind podcast listeners that the Tigers faced a squad that appeared ready to contend for a third national championship in as many years.
Murray remarked, “They (Clemson) were up against maybe the best defense in the country.” Let’s take a moment to process that. Though I’m willing to believe there were more Georgia fans than Clemson enthusiasts, it was a neutral website. You are playing a pseudo-away game against a top defense that may include Mykel Williams, the top defensive end in the NFL Draft, Malaki Starks, the number one safety, and several other first-round picks.
Murray stated that while Georgia is good, the Tigers are also, and he thinks they can show it this season.
